Update on MoveIt! in ROS-I Community Meeting

Sachin Chitta gave an update on MoveIt! in the ROS-I community meeting recently. The meeting had over 100 participants from academia and industry. Other updates included a talk about the Descartes Cartesian path planner and about the use of DDS in ROS 2.0. Watch the full video below.

    The Amazon Picking Challenge

Amazon's automated warehouses are successful at removing much of the walking and searching for items within a warehouse. However, commercially viable automated picking in unstructured environments still remains a difficultc challenge. In order to spur the advancement of this fundamental technology we are excited to be organizing the first Amazon Picking Challenge at ICRA 2015.

Alten Mechatronics Applies Robotic Technology in FEI Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM)

Alten Mechatronics recently used the motion planners available with MoveIt! for a new application with path planning for Transmission Electron Microscopes. Read the ROS-I blog post and watch the movie below for more details about this novel use of MoveIt! to plan collision-free paths.

New Capabilities in MoveIt! - the Cartesian Path Planner Plugin

Risto Kojcev, a joint PhD student between the BioRobotics Institute at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and MicroBio Robotics Institute at the Italian Institute of Technology, in Pisa Italy participated in the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) directed by the Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF) and ROS-Industrial (ROS-I) Consortium. His project (under the mentorship of Shaun Edwards at SwRI) was the development of a new Cartesian Path Planner Plug-In for MoveIt!. You can read all about his project on the ROS-I blog post and watch the movie below for more details.

    RoNex and MoveIt!

The Shadow Robot Company has released the RoNex series of products based on an industrial strength fieldbus. The RoNex modules come natively with ROS drivers allowing users to build and connect custom robot hardware directly to their computers. CKBot, Whole-arm Grasping and MoveIt!

Jun Seo, at the GRASP Lab in the University of Pennsylvania, has been working on integrating MoveIt! with the CKBot robotic platform. CKBot is a modular robot that can be configured in custom ways for different tasks. It consists of cubical modules approximately 6 cm on each side that can be connected to each other quickly. Jun has written a [fantastic tutorial](http://ihome.ust.hk/~junseo/grasping_pipeline/index.html) on the integration of MoveIt! with CKBot, which is a good template for anyone integrating a new custom robot with MoveIt!.
